The Boys and Girls Club of Mount Vernon held its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner November 21, 2019 from 6:30-8:30 pm. The event was held at the Boys and Girls Club located at 350 South Sixth Avenue in Mount Vernon. There were over 200 people attending the festive occasion which was initially coordinated for seniors and veterans but is enjoyed by the clubs many kids and people in the community.
The dinner is sponsored by York International whose President, Rob Kestenbaum, is also Vice President of the Board of Directors for the club. Kestenbaum has been sponsoring the event since 2012 and simply wants to give back to the community where he grew up. The food consisted of the usual Thanksgiving fare, turkey, ham, green beans etc and was served by volunteers from York International staff.
Mel Campos, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys and Girls Club in Mount Vernon, beamed as everyone was treated to music from a DJ and a Jazz musician and vocalist. There were also dance routines performed by two youth groups. According to the clubs website, The Boys Club of Mount Vernon opened in 1912 to accommodate for the growing social programs and lack of organized facilities serving youth in the City of Mount Vernon, NY. To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990. In 1956 the club moved into the current building on Sixth Avenue”.
Denzel Washington himself used to attend the Mount Vernon club and stated it is “the most important not for profit in America”
and he “would not be on the planet if it was not for the Boys and Girls Club”. To learn more about the Boys and Girls Club in Mount Vernon please visit https://www.bgcmvny.org/
